Tobias Peggs is co-founder and CEO of Square Roots, an indoor urban farming company that grows food in controlled environments located near the cities where the food is consumed. The company was founded on the premise that climate change, droughts, floods, and long-distance supply chains are making traditional outdoor agriculture increasingly volatile, and that local indoor farms can deliver fresh produce to consumers within hours of harvest.
Peggs runs what he describes as a deeply full-stack business. Square Roots employs a hardware and software engineering team designing and improving the farms themselves, a construction team that builds them, and a farming team trained to operate the technology on the ground. The Square Roots app guides farmers through daily activities and feeds observations and photos back to a cloud-based analytics engine. The system is built to deliver consistent yields without pesticides, with recirculating water and energy use low enough to compete on price with commodity field crops.
